A BAP submission of 4 unsexed juveniles (at least a half-inch long). Males will develop red caudal and anal fins, females don't. These juveniles have yet to show any dimorphism.
This is sort of an odd-ball within the 20 species of pencilfishes. It is one of the smallest (barely an inch when adult size), and it comes from a spring of clear water but has not been found further downstream in the softer, more-acidic blackwaters. It is not commonly bred, but I was fortunate to watch them spawn. One male chases away the other males and focuses on a particular female that he has chosen. The two eventually quiver side by side next to vertical vegetation with the female dropping a two or three eggs per time. This activity must have continued on-and-off over two or three weeks, as I spotted a few newly hatched fry here and there along the bottom corners. While I did rescue a few and raised a couple apart form the colony, I ended up having more success just leaving the fry in the spawning tank - which had a lot of java moss on the bottom along one side. Still, the productivity is low.
I usually prefer to use my pro camera, but two of these shots came from my phone during the spawning session.
