The Chocolate Gourami (Sphaerichthys osphromenoides) is a peaceful, shy, and visually striking fish known for its deep brown color and yellow stripes.

Originating from the blackwater swamps of Southeast Asia, they thrive in soft, acidic, tannin-stained water with plenty of plants and gentle filtration, preferring live or frozen foods. They are mouthbrooders, with the female holding eggs in her mouth.

Appearance & Behavior

Color: Deep chocolate brown with yellow or cream stripes, which can change with mood. 

Size: Small, typically 2–3 inches (5–7 cm). 

Temperament: Peaceful and shy; slow-moving and easily intimidated. 

Habitat: Prefers dimly lit, heavily planted tanks with driftwood, mimicking their natural blackwater swamp environment. 

Social: Can be kept in groups, but dominant individuals may harass others. 

Care Requirements

Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group, but larger is better. 

Water: Soft, acidic (4.0-6.0 pH), and warm (77–81°F). 

Filtration: Gentle flow is essential. 

Diet: requires a varied diet of live/frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia

Breeding

Maternal Mouthbrooder: The female carries the eggs in her mouth for 7–12 days after fertilization. 

Tank: A species-only tank is best to avoid stress and egg loss. 

Conditions: Requires very soft, acidic water and minimal disturbance during brooding.
