Floating Colonizing Green Hair Algae

Aquatic plants, lot number 461-4

Hair Algae with its single cell thickness, is one of the best denitrifying strategies you can implement.  It acts like a Nitrate sponge helping detoxify the water for your many critters.  Most hair algae also comes with many negative "side effects".  This cultivar does not.  This hair algae is cohesive not adhesive.  Its cells only "stick" to another algal cell.... not to the glass, filters or plants like many other hair algae strains.  Another advantage is that it floats. This cultivar can form a thick floating mat on the surface of the water.  That "mat" in turn becomes a literal nitrate sponge.  As you can see in the photo, many algal filaments are pendent, hanging down offering great hiding places for fish fry and immature shrimp.  It is much easier to "weed out" than other "plants".  Most of it floats so it's easy to reach in and tear off a chuck of the floating mat.  If cells revert to the sinking habit, they still colonize into little green hair algae "balls". Easily removed because the cells stick to themselves ... not to the glass or filters.  Looks good, offers hiding places for fry, absorbs nitrates and doesn't take over the tank.... win, win, win, win!
