Apistogramma trifasciata, commonly known as the Three‑Stripe Apisto, is a small and elegant South American dwarf cichlid recognized by its slender body, elongated fins, and distinctive horizontal striping, especially vivid in males. In the home aquarium, it is relatively peaceful but displays classic apistogramma behavior, becoming more territorial during breeding while otherwise coexisting well with small, calm tankmates. This species is appreciated for its active foraging behavior near the substrate and its engaging courtship and parental care. In nature, Apistogramma trifasciata is found in the upper Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, inhabiting shallow, slow‑moving streams and flooded forest areas with soft, acidic water and abundant leaf litter.
