The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a striking and energetic barb best known for the brilliant red stripe that runs along the sides of mature males, especially when in breeding condition. In the home aquarium, it is an active, schooling fish that does best in groups, where its confidence increases and fin‑nipping behavior is reduced. Odessa Barbs are hardy, curious, and constantly on the move, making them an engaging addition to lively community tanks. In nature, Pethia padamya is native to Myanmar (Burma), where it inhabits clear, moderately flowing streams and rivers with sandy substrates and dense vegetation.
