Ginger var 'Bill Cole'

Terrestrial plants, lot number 247
Bred by this user

I love to grow plants emersed (roots in the water, leaves in the air) in the back of my tanks.  Because they pull CO2 from the air, they can grow much faster than any submersed plants, out-competing algae and scrubbing nitrates from the tank water.  Plus the roots provide cover for fry and the leaves make fish feel more secure, reducing jumping and stress.

I'm always on the lookout for new cool plants that can be grown like this.

Pothos works, but I have so much of it that I need a machete to prune it and it's honestly a bit boring.

Most of the other plants I've tried have spines, shoot a bukake of pollen all over the room when they flower (thank you peace lilies, never again!), or teach out new things like what contact dermatitis is (hooray for Purple heart, Tradescantia pallida), or just kind of wither and die without really flourishing.  And don't get me started on monstera, if I wanted to pay good money for a bunch of holes I'd buy swiss cheese.

Anyway, last year I got this plant from Bill Cole -- he called it wild ginger, although he didn't know the species (which is why I'm calling it var 'Bill Cole') although he got it from Rosario originally so maybe I should call it that.

It hasn't flowered for me yet so I can't key it out and get the exact species, nor can I be 100% sure that it won't spray pollen all over the place when it does, but let me tell you  this plant is awesome.  Nice compact, dense growth, grows fast but not quite as fast a pothos, beautiful green color, doesn't seem to die back.  And look at those beautiful white roots, WOW, think of the things you can spawn in there!
