Apistogramma hogsloi is a stunning dwarf cichlid that brings both beauty and charm to any freshwater aquarium. Known for its vibrant coloration, this species features striking yellow and orange hues, with males often developing deeper red and gold tones, particularly in the Red Gold morph, which is highly prized for its intense, vivid colors. These fish are peaceful yet territorial, and they thrive in aquariums with plenty of hiding spots like caves, plants, and driftwood, which mimic their natural South American habitat. Ideal water parameters for Apistogramma hogsloi include a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 5.5-7.0, and soft to moderately soft water (1-10 dGH). They are best kept in pairs or small groups, with one male and several females to minimize aggression. When in breeding condition, males intensify their colors, with the Red Gold morph showcasing their brightest and most attractive red and gold accents. During spawning, the female guards the eggs, typically laid in a cave or on flat surfaces, while the male helps protect the territory. The fry are well-cared for by both parents, with the female taking the lead in guarding and caring for them. Apistogramma hogsloi, especially in the Red Gold morph, are a captivating species for aquarists seeking a colorful and engaging addition to their tank.
