Pelvicachromis subocellatus, a charming dwarf cichlid from West Africa, is a wonderful choice for aquarists seeking a colorful and peaceful species with interesting behaviors. These fish are relatively small, reaching a maximum size of around 3 inches (7.5 cm), with females often being slightly smaller but more vibrantly colored—especially during courtship, when their bellies glow with rich shades of pink or purple, contrasting beautifully with their yellowish-gold flanks and dark markings. They thrive in well-structured aquariums with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and dense planting. Ideal water conditions include a temperature of 75–80°F (24–27°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (4–12 dGH). These cichlids are generally peaceful and do well in a calm community tank, particularly with other non-aggressive species. During breeding, a bonded pair will select a cave or sheltered area for spawning, with the female guarding the eggs and fry while the male defends the territory. Their engaging parenting behavior and attractive appearance, especially that of the vividly colored females, make Pelvicachromis subocellatus a rewarding and visually striking addition to a peaceful freshwater setup.
