Young fish with a normal tiger barb mixed in. These are not yet adult sized.
Green tiger barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona) are a striking and energetic fish variety, displaying an iridescent green sheen over their classic tiger-striped pattern, giving them a bold and mesmerizing appearance. These lively fish are best kept in groups of at least six to eight, as their natural shoaling behavior helps curb their notorious tendency to nip at the fins of slower-moving or long-finned tankmates. When kept in larger schools, their playful energy is directed toward each other rather than bothering other fish in the aquarium. They thrive in well-maintained tanks with plenty of open swimming space and some planted areas for refuge. Ideal water conditions include a temperature of 72-80°F (22-27°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (5-15 dGH). Green tiger barbs are enthusiastic eaters, readily accepting a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Their active, mischievous nature, combined with their dazzling colors, makes them an exciting and dynamic choice for community aquariums, provided they are kept in appropriately sized schools to prevent bullying behaviors.
