They are detritivores, primarily feeding on decaying plant matter and scavenging. Scuds serve as an excellent food source for small fish and reproduce prolifically. Interesting facts: They are frequently mistaken for shrimp, but shrimp are a different crustacean order (shrimp are decapods and scuds are amphipods). Scuds can tolerates a wide temperature range, from near freezing to above 30C (they are more hardy than freshwater dwarf shrimp).
